The St. Regis Cap Cana: Where Culture Grounds Luxury

PROJECTS 01.07.25

At the southern edge of the Dominican Republic, where the sea traces the cliffs in quiet repetition, The St. Regis Cap Cana rises, not as an escape from culture, but as a tribute to it. Designed by CHAPI Design under Tatiana Sheveleva, this hotel is shaped by the layered heritage of the island. Rather than treating culture as décor, CHAPI transforms it into structure, palette, and form, embedding history into every stone, textile, and curve.

Stepping into the resort’s lobby, guests are met with a space that reflects the island’s diversity without overstating it. A central waterfall softens the bold architecture, and a sculptural staircase sweeps upwards. Nicknamed “The Meeting of All Palms,” this space introduces the project’s design language, raw yet refined, tactile yet elegant.

The minibar and cocktail trolley are embedded in the room’s rhythm, standing ready for sunset rituals. The faceless doll, a traditional Dominican craft, runs through the hotel as a symbol of shared identity. By leaving the face blank, it speaks to inclusivity and collective heritage.

At the Cigar Club, smoky lines and velvet curves offer a more introspective counterpoint, evoking the ritual and elegance of a hand-rolled cigar rising into the sky. Curved walls, intricate finishes, and organic textures combine to create rooms that feel designed for both presence and memory.

Each dining venue reflects a distinct facet of Dominican culture. The Steakhouse weaves together indigenous, African, and colonial influences through a palette of stone, carved wood, and deep colour. The Three-Meal Restaurant is centred around a cascading indoor waterfall, a quiet nod to the theme “from the inside out,” where nature flows through design. In contrast, the Cigar Club is smoky, sensual, and sculptural. A space that holds both stillness and movement.

The Spa takes cues from the island’s coastlines, with organic lines and shifting tones of stone and wood. Water moves softly through the space, mirroring natural springs and shoreline textures.

CHAPI Design’s work at The St. Regis Cap Cana embodies the history, the movement of water and the materials of the island. Every space is a gesture of respect and reinterpretation. The result is not just a new chapter in Caribbean luxury but a benchmark for how design can honour culture by making space for it to live, breathe, and welcome.
