Maison Cassandre by Oscar Lucien Ono: An Art Deco Hotel in Pigalle

PROJECTS 09.01.24

Oscar Lucien Ono, founder of Maison Numéro 20, has renovated Maison Cassandre, a 4-star boutique hotel just steps from Pigalle. Behind its clean-lined Haussmannian façade adorned with wood, Maison Cassandre invites guests to relive the glamour and vibrancy of Paris during the Roaring Twenties.

Visitors entering Maison Cassandre are immediately enveloped in a lavish, golden-toned ambiance, defined by sharp geometric lines and harmonious patterns. From the chevron parquet flooring to the marquetry accents, the design celebrates precision and elegance. Decorative touches, such as a shimmering mosaic and alabaster wall sconces originally designed in 1924 by architect Pierre Chareau, underscore Oscar Lucien Ono's deep appreciation for the Art Deco era. Complementing this is a bespoke decorative painting by artist Cédric Peltier, which draws inspiration from the work of poster artist Cassandre and the innovative creations of Jean Dunand, a renowned decorator and lacquer artist of the same period.

Maison Cassandre, with its 37 rooms, is distinguished by intimate communal spaces as boudoirs enhanced by folding screens. The walls are draped in wild silk, while the furniture—crafted from luxurious Macassar ebony—adds depth and richness to the interiors. Murano glass chandeliers cast a warm, inviting glow, and door frames painted to mimic burl wood or faux marble showcase a mastery of artisanal techniques. These conversation salons serve as an ode to exceptional materials and craftsmanship.

The hotel’s interiors draw from the bold glamour of the 1920s and 1930s, featuring vintage furnishings like a feline-inspired chaise longue in the entrance lounge. Exotic motifs of tigers, leopards, and birds appear across chair backs, carpets, and curtains, adding a sense of adventure. These striking details contrast with neoclassical busts and statues, creating a ‘cabinet of curiosities’ feel that celebrates timeless opulence and eclectic charm.

Every detail of the rooms, from their layout to the custom-designed headboards, has been meticulously crafted by Maison Numéro 20 to provide guests with an unforgettable experience. The rooms are available in three thoughtfully curated colour schemes: calming sea green, timeless beige, and bold terracotta red, each with matching fabrics. Adding a graphic touch, picture rails painted in black draw inspiration from Art Deco frames and posters. The ensuite bathrooms echo this balance of sophistication and simplicity, incorporating the same colour palettes alongside pristine white marble.

Oscar Lucien Ono established the interior design studio Maison Numéro 20 in 2014. Situated in Saint-Germain-des-Prés, a hub for both art and design, Maison Numéro 20 represents a fresh approach to interior architecture, with a portfolio that spans private residences, luxury hotels, restaurants, and boutiques worldwide.

Renowned for his eclectic style and bold creativity, Oscar Lucien Ono draws from a wide range of influences, reimagining them to craft his distinct vision of refinement and elegance. With a degree in art history, he creates compelling connections between artistic disciplines and aesthetic movements, shaping interiors that are as intellectually engaging as they are visually striking.
