Liquid Canvas: Pools as the New Artform

EXPERTS 01.07.25

Swimming pools have evolved from functional amenities into dazzling works of art. Today’s designers and architects are pushing boundaries, creating pools that do more than cool or contain, they inspire, delight, and transform spaces into immersive experiences.

Take, for instance, the lush, courtyard pool at Manon Les Suites in Copenhagen. Enclosed within a vertical garden of trailing greenery and lanterns, this pool is more than an aquatic retreat, it’s an urban oasis where design and nature meet. The glimmering tiles, arranged in a subtle, shifting mosaic, play with light and shadow as sunlight filters through the canopy above, creating a dynamic spectacle of movement and reflection.

At Le Sirenuse in Positano, the pool dazzles with a mosaic that resembles an abstract painting. Swirls of blue, turquoise, and deep green create a sense of fluidity and depth, capturing the movement of the water and reflecting the vivid surroundings. The design is as much a celebration of craftsmanship as it is a statement of style.

In Miami, Alex Proba redefines pool art with her kaleidoscopic creation. Here, the pool floor itself becomes a canvas, adorned with a vibrant, abstract mural of organic shapes and saturated hues. Proba’s artistry transforms swimming into an interaction with colour and form, where swimmers glide over a living painting that changes with every ripple.

At Casino Doxi Stracca in Puglia, the swimming pool is a poetic extension of the villa’s serene luxury. Lined with earthy, timeworn stone and flanked by classic parasols and loungers, the long, narrow pool unfolds like a reflective corridor through a Mediterranean garden. Surrounded by wild lavender, cypress trees, and rustic architecture, it’s the kind of place where swimming feels peaceful, elegant, and deeply connected to its setting.

Then there’s Koketit’s mesmerising AI created pool design, where flowing black lines trace abstract faces across a field of turquoise tiles. Overlooking a vast seascape, this pool creates a serene conversation between the structure and the natural horizon, blurring the line between art and environment.

In Palm Beach, a pool adorned with a giant floral mosaic brings botanical elegance to aquatic design. Here, petal-like shapes in blush pinks and deep greens float just below the surface, adding a playful, yet sophisticated layer to the crystalline water, harmonizing with the surrounding landscape of manicured gardens and sunlit arcades.

These pools exemplify a shift in design thinking, where water becomes a medium, and the pool, once a passive backdrop, takes centre stage as a work of art. Through bold material choices, inventive tilework, and thoughtfully integrated landscapes, these designers are reimagining the pool as an immersive aesthetic experience, turning everyday swim spaces into liquid canvases.
