Georgia Interior Designer, Brenda Thompson tells OLISE how she went from corporate America to setting up her own design firm.
Q: You had a completely different life before you set up your interior design business. Tell us about your early career and what made you change and decide to set up your own firm.
I started my career in corporate America where I developed a strong foundation in business fundamentals. While I enjoyed that phase of my career, I have always felt a deep passion for design and creativity. In my free time, I would spend lots of time dreaming and implementing new design ideas into my own home. The idea of transforming spaces to reflect the personalities and lifestyles of people who live there kept pulling me in. And just as important, I believe wholeheartedly that you should feel good in your home. After years of honing my skills and gaining confidence, I decided it was time to take the leap. Founding HouseLift Design was my way of merging my passion for design with my desire to create meaningful, personalized spaces for my clients.
Q: What were the biggest challenges when setting up your own interior design business?
Starting HouseLift Design was both exciting and daunting. I started HLD as a side hustle, not expecting it to become a full-time business. Little did I know it would take off and for almost a decade now we have been serving clients in a full service capacity. One of the biggest challenges was building our trade relationships, allowing us to offer curated furnishings and selections. Balancing creativity with the demands of running a business was another significant hurdle, but each challenge taught me invaluable lessons that have shaped the firm into what it is today.
Q: What part of running your own business gives you the most pleasure?
The most rewarding part of running my own business is seeing the transformation of a space from concept to completion and the joy it brings to our clients. Additionally, I love the freedom to innovate and explore new ideas, ensuring that every project is unique and reflective of the client's personality.
Q: Can you talk us through your design process and where your inspiration comes from?
Our design process begins with getting to know the client—their preferences, lifestyle, and wish list. From there, we collaborate closely with them to develop a concept that not only meets their needs but also pushes the boundaries of their imagination. Inspiration comes from various sources—travel, nature, art, and architecture. We believe that every space has a story to tell, and our goal is to weave that narrative into the design in a way that feels authentic and personal.
Q: The different projects that you have undertaken show a great variety in design but also a consistency in sophistication and quality. How do you ensure both creativity and quality is taken into consideration when taking on a new project?
Maintaining a balance between creativity, quality and functionality is crucial to the success of any project. At HouseLift Design, we start by setting clear expectations with our clients and establishing a solid framework for the project. We then focus on creative exploration, ensuring that each design element is meticulously chosen for both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Quality is non-negotiable, so we work closely with skilled craftsmen and reliable vendors who share our commitment to excellence. Regular check-ins and attention to detail ensure that the final result not only meets but exceeds our client's expectations.
Q: What has been your most challenging project to date and how did you overcome it?
One of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on involved a historic home that required a careful balance between preservation and modernization. The client wanted to maintain the charm and character of the original structure while making it functional for modern living. We faced numerous challenges, from sourcing materials during worldwide supply chain issues during the height of Covid, and navigating structural limitations. The key to overcoming these challenges was constant communication with the client, a flexible approach to problem-solving, and collaborating with expert 3rd party trades. The end result was a space that honored the home's history while providing the comfort and functionality the client desired.
Q: Is there a particular room that you have created that is your favorite and if so why?
This is a tough one! I can honestly say, I don’t have one favorite space we’ve designed. My favorite spaces evoke a sense of calm, are aesthetically pleasing, have something creative, and are super functional. We focus on creating calming spaces using color, texture, and intentional lighting.
Q: You are based in Georgia, USA. How does the local culture influence your designs?
Georgia has a rich history and diverse culture, which we love. Many areas of the city have different vibes and we tweak our designs based on the client and the home itself - whether it’s a historic residence or a modern custom home build. It keeps getting interesting! This mix of old and new, traditional and modern, is something we strive to reflect in our work, creating spaces that feel both timeless and current.
Q: Houselift Design has been going from strength to strength since it was founded over a decade ago. What is coming next and can you show us a sneak peek?
We’re always looking for ways to innovate and expand our offerings. Currently, we’re exploring integrating more smart home technology with our designs to enhance both functionality and sustainability. We’re also working on a new collection of furniture offerings that will reflect our design philosophy and expand our reach in the marketplace. It’s very exciting! As for a sneak peek, let’s just say our upcoming projects will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in interior design, blending sophistication with the latest in design innovation.
Q: If you could visit anywhere in the world right now, where would it be?
There are so many places on my travel list, but if I had to pick one, Switzerland would be at the top. The stunning landscapes - from the towering Alps to the tranquil lakes, provide an ideal retreat and a wealth of inspiration. Switzerland’s unique blend of natural beauty, meticulous design, and deep respect for craftsmanship aligns perfectly with my design philosophy. The way the country seamlessly combines modernity with timeless traditions is something I find deeply inspiring, and I would love to immerse myself in its rich culture and breathtaking scenery.
Q: If you could offer one piece of advice to your younger self before you set up your business, what would it be?
I would advise my younger self to trust the process and embrace risks without hesitation. Starting a business comes with its fair share of challenges, but each one is a chance to learn and evolve. I would also stress the importance of building a solid support network—people who believe in you and your vision. And above all, I’d remind myself to stay true to my passion for design, as it’s that passion that turns work into something truly enjoyable.
