Between Stone, Breeze and Sea
PROJECTS
Perched on a limestone cliff in Bali’s Uluwatu region, this striking residence by SAOTA reinterprets the essence of tropical living through a lens of contemporary design. Sculptural and grounded, it captures the raw energy of the Bukit Peninsula while seamlessly integrating with the surrounding ocean, jungle and sky.
The approach is deliberately theatrical. A grand stairway, flanked by water features and tall palms, draws visitors into a world where landscape and architecture are intertwined. At dusk, hand-scored stone walls in dark local materials cast elongated shadows, the home glowing from within like an island lantern.
Inside, spaces flow with purpose and ease. There are no corridors, only transitions between shaded pavilions, breezeways, and lush planted courtyards. Concrete roofs hover above open volumes, textured with timber detailing and softened by cross-ventilation and sea breezes.
Most dramatic is the infinity pool terrace, extending out toward the horizon. Below it, a floating dining pavilion, open yet private, sits amid greenery, catching the breeze.
Throughout, tactile materials anchor the home in place. Travertine, dark stone, and bronzed metal are paired with soft timber and European furnishings, creating a layered sense of calm, craft and quiet luxury.
