A Taste of Imperial Beijing at MEI LI Grand Hyatt Kuwait

PROJECTS 15.10.24

In the heart of the Grand Hyatt Towers in Kuwait, a majestic Chinese restaurant, MEI LI is found. Inspired by imperial Beijing and designed by AB Concept, the flair, beauty and personality of the restaurant is awe inspiring.

The menu combines the most popular dishes from the imperial palaces of old Beijing, which slowly trickled down into the narrow streets of China. Throughout time, these imperial treasures blended with common food providing the best of both culinary worlds. The renowned Peking Duck with the more subdued Begga’s Chicken are equals.

The restaurant is an energetic, modern and exhilarating lifestyle space. Bold and timeless Chinese signature dishes, worldly cocktails with Chinese touches and a dramatic dessert menu are designed to awe all the senses.

As guests step into the bar they are awash with a predominant blue theme that leads to the first main dining area, covered by blue timber flooring. The sapphire blue upholstered booth seating on the right side offers elegance and a sense of togetherness, paired along with the onyx table.

On the opposite side the bar features crystal screens resembling a traditional Chinese six-panelled lacquered screen, along with pendant lights suspended atop the bartender inspired by elements of Chinese opera.

With a capacity of 104 guests, the space is divided into two dining rooms and a bar lounge. The design concept of the two main dining rooms is of two souls in search of perfect harmony, the union between flamboyant and elegance complimenting the whimsical aesthetic touches of Chinese opera, where East and West merge seamlessly.

The dramatic theme extends into the second main dining room. Walking through the doors, guests enter a grandiose dining room, where the Chinese theme is highlighted by the red lacquer ceiling, in contrast with the charcoal grey stone flooring. The majestic chandelier evokes the presence of Dan, the female role in the Chinese opera. Further into the room there is a private dining room featuring semi-transparent embroidery panels to create the wall of the birdcage shape. Divine.

The main dining room features a peking duck display station, a dessert library, and a beggar’s chicken station. What more could you ask for?

AB Concept, founded and led by Ed Ng and Terence Ngan has a unique design approach. Drawing on similarities to how a chef develops a recipe, exploring local culture and experimenting with tastes and skills. The result? Bespoke experiences through narrative-driven interiors; meticulous attention to detail, creating moments that matter in luxury environments across hospitality, commercial and residential sectors.
