A Private World Hidden in the City

PROJECTS 01.07.25

Tucked into a quiet mews in the heart of Notting Hill, this striking townhouse by Arcola Studio offers a calm, characterful retreat above the hum of London life. More than just a home, the project is a study in contrasts—refined yet relaxed, sculptural yet restrained, and above all, personal.

The design unfolds gradually. From street level, there’s little hint of the carefully curated world above. But inside, a sweeping carbon-fibre staircase spirals into view—at once an architectural statement and a moment of grace. Its fluid form draws the eye upward and anchors the home’s three levels, offering movement without disrupting the tranquillity of the space.

Throughout the house, Arcola has layered textures and tones to create a quietly immersive experience. The material palette is warm and tactile: oak-lined walls, soft upholstery, hand-finished plaster and smooth resin underfoot. It’s a space that prioritises feeling over formality—where comfort is never compromised for the sake of minimalism.

On the main living level, a deep terracotta-hued sofa curves gently around a low table, framing conversation and connection. The backdrop: built-in shelving, cabinetry and bookcases, crafted from pale wood and seamlessly integrated into the architecture. A teddy boucle armchair adds a playful, cosy touch, offset by rich green glass and polished chrome details.

The home is rich in contrasts. In the music lounge, a dramatic grid of records lines the walls, adding depth and rhythm to the moody setting. On the upper level, light floods in through angled skylights and crisp window frames, where a sculptural white sofa perches like a cloud beneath the sloping ceiling. Glass block partitions soften transitions between spaces, while vintage accents and bespoke furniture add depth and character.

Blending mid-century influences, 1970s warmth and contemporary craft, Arcola Studio has crafted a home that feels timeless and entirely lived-in. There is no posturing here—just an intelligent, generous design that invites you to settle in, breathe out, and feel at home.
