A Charismatic Madrid Apartment by Backsteen Studio

PROJECTS 09.01.24

Located in the bustling heart of Madrid, this one-bedroom apartment, redesigned by Backsteen Studio under the vision of Víctor Zorita, has been transformed into a spacious and charismatic retreat. Spanning 160 square meters with south- and west-facing orientations, the home now enjoys an abundance of natural light, enhancing its open-plan design.

Backsteen Studio’s primary challenge was to redefine the apartment’s heavily compartmentalized structure. The solution? An innovative integration of existing columns and beams, which transitioned from obstacles to design elements that naturally delineate the social zones. The result is a series of interconnected yet distinct spaces—each brimming with personality.

The entryway, accented by Campaspero stone, sets a tone of understated luxury. This flows seamlessly into the kitchen, where warm wooden cabinetry adds an organic touch. A central living space, with striking views of the surrounding cityscape, anchors the apartment. Here, a bespoke white marble chimney becomes the focal point, flanked by contemporary furnishings that have refined elegance.

Each piece in this home tells a story, contributing to its unique charm. The living room features the plush Betty Space Sofa, complemented by travertine tables—custom creations by Backsteen Studio. The addition of a vintage Danish appliance from the 1960s introduces an element of retro, blending seamlessly with the modern aesthetic.

The apartment’s décor reflects a meticulous curation of materials and forms. In the sitting area, sculptural orange armchairs contrast beautifully against the neutral palette of the walls and floors. A sculptural piece by Anton Aiguabella graces one corner, while sofas from SofActual, adorned with fabric by Pepe Peñalver, echo the design studio’s commitment to craftsmanship.

The study is stunning, enveloped in calming shades of blue. Here, paneling adds depth and texture, while a white Pacha chair from Gubi provides an inviting spot for reflection. A mid-century wooden desk anchors the room, paired with a striking red lamp that adds a bold pop of color. The vibrant Kilombo Rug beneath ties the elements together, balancing tradition and modernity.

The dining area is a celebration of clean lines and natural materials. A marble-topped dining table takes center stage, surrounded by cane-backed wooden chairs. Overhead, a sculptural pendant light adds a modern flourish, while a bold red artwork injects a dramatic focal point. Adjacent to this space, the continuity of the orange armchairs ties the design language across rooms.

A small terrace extends the apartment’s living space, offering a tranquil escape amidst the bustling city. Comfortable outdoor seating surrounded by an array of potted plants, creates a lush and inviting atmosphere. It's the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening aperitivo.

The transformation of this apartment exemplifies Backsteen Studio’s ability to blend structural challenges with creative solutions. By opening up the layout and embracing the existing architectural features, the studio has created a home that is both functional and deeply personal. Each room tells a cohesive story—a testament to the power of thoughtful design.
